PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
Executive Summary
|
Image from the Inside
Out:
What Can Image Do for Your Business?
Gail Madjzoub
IMAGE is largely composed of the following elements:
Internal pictures of ourselves, dialogs WITH ourselves & feelings.
External: general demeanor, body language, posture, speech,
grooming, dress, actions in general, personal interactions in particular.
Matching
inner image, dialog & feelings with outer demeanor, dress & actions
i.e. "Dressing the part" (dressing the way you feel vs feeling
the way you dress") & "Acting the part" (acting
the way you feel vs feeling the way you act) gives us CONGRUENCE, which
is essential to achieving a credible image.
Other FACTORS THAT CAN INFLUENCE IMAGE are our CHARACTER
QUALITIES & INNER ATTITUDE, which, in turn, are influenced by, among
other things, the following:
LANGUAGE:
Not only words, but also voice tone & volume, body language posture,
and gait, are forms of language. Without saying one word, our bodies
give away our mood, attitude & emotions. When we speak, our
tone and volume may belie the words we use.
BOUNDARIES:
Keeping our word in action reflects setting Boundaries. Committing
to what we are sure we CAN and WILL do is setting Boundaries.
Establishing Ground Rules, a protocol, limits; setting procedures and
policies AND STICKING TO ALL OF THESE is keeping Boundaries.
When Boundaries are set and adhered to, there are no surprises; people
feel a certain safety and comfort within these and they know, after some
experience with you, that they can count on you. You are then reliable & trustworthy.
LEARNING FROM TEACHABLE MOMENTS:
Taking some time each day for personal reflection on what you are doing
in both your personal and professional life, gives you the opportunity
to learn from each day’s experiences. It may be a simple
lesson on what worked or didn’t work; it may also be an "Aha
Moment" that could give you new insight into yourself and to others
and, consequently, your interaction with others.
Learning is vital if we ourselves and our businesses are going to grow. A
few minute’s reflection every day can go a long way to ensuring
regular growth in quality, and, ultimately, in "quantity".
HONORING THE SPIRIT:
This is "spirit" in its very broadest sense. It can
mean anything from our soul to our spirit of excellence and enthusiasm;
from team spirit to company spirit; from the spirit of friendship to
community spirit.
Honoring the Spirit involves accepting ourselves and others for what
we are and are not; setting goals for reaching the potential we know
is there and then following a systematic plan for reaching those goals. It
means taking stock of ourselves and our communities, our colleagues,
our employees and our business associates in ways which show our integrity,
our courage to move forward and our support along the way.
DEEP LISTENING WITHOUT RESCUING:
Deep listening involves the whole body, not just the ears. This
means being totally and utterly present to the person you are with.
Why is deep listening good for business? First of all, it’s
a very rare commodity; being an excellent listener will set you apart
from many, many others. Second of all, it shows YOUR inner character:
your commitment to client or employee; your integrity, concern and sense
of service.
Third of all, it’s good for YOU as a person. Deep
listening requires self-discipline and effort. It helps us detach
from our ego, gives us greater understanding and appreciation of others
AND of ourselves. In short, it helps, as all these other points,
to align our inner and outer selves.
*****************
The whole purpose of Image is to bring our inner and outer selves into
alignment to the extent that "what you see IS what you get". In
the business world today, this is very often not the case. When
our personal inner image is aligned with our outer image and both of
these are aligned with our business image, we become truly credible and
even "incredible"!
WHAT TYPE OF IMAGE DO YOU NEED TO HAVE
FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

Visionaries Series
|
As we mark our 15 year anniversary, the South Shore Women's
Business
Network wishes to celebrate and acknowledge a group of
women
who have been instrumental in our founding, growth and development and
who embody our goals as women in business. Of the many women who
have worked to make the Network one of the best places for women in
business to grow and thrive, we have named the following as our "Visionaries".
They are:
Vicki Donlan, Women's Business Boston;
Susan Hammond, CFO Strategies;
Nancy Boyle, GMC Software Technology;
Pat Mullaly, Circle Graphics;
Dolly DiPesa, DiPesa & Co. CPA;
Ellen O'Conner , E. A. O'Connor Insurance;
Phyllis Godwin, Granite City Electric;
Joan Ryder, Ryder Insurance;
Phyllis Wenzel, Image Resolutions; and
Veva Johnson, Professional Bookkeeping Services
The following is our new column written by Jennifer
Bruni that
will profile each of our Visionaries. Jennifer is the Founder and
Managing Director of Mercury Communications, a marketing services
and communications company. |
SSWBN Visionaries Series - #4
Ms. Phyllis Papani Godwin
Chairman & CEO
Granite City Electric Supply Co.
19 Quincy Avenue
Quincy, MA 02169
www.granitecityelectric.com
phyllisg@granitecityelectric.com
In 1969, Phyllis Godwin became the owner of her father’s business,
Granite City Electric Supply Company which was started in 1923. Her
father gave her three choices: sell it, leave it to others to run,
or run it yourself. The company had one location in Quincy (MA)
and sold electrical equipment and lighting to electrical contractors,
industrial accounts and institutions. It also had one retail lighting
showroom.. Phyllis was reluctant to enter this male dominated business
where she had little experience but she took her first tentative steps
and 35 years later the company has 20 locations in five New England states.
A native of Quincy, Phyllis attended Thayer Academy and graduated from
Brown University with a degree in psychology. She went back to
school in the 1970’s to get her MBA from Suffolk University. The
classes were held on weekends which allowed her to work full time at
the company. As a single mother of two young daughters, she juggled
the demands of work, school and mothering and in retrospect she says
the experience helped her to stay organized and streamline her life.
How does Phyllis balance all the areas of her life so well? She meditates
to focus and relax, and handle business-related stress by keeping work
demands in perspective. And, after years of paying her dues, "I’ve
finally gotten to the point in my life where I’m not stressed at
all," Phyllis says. As CEO, she has successfully delegated all
the operational and other day-to-day responsibilities, leaving her plenty
of time to concentrate on the "big picture" areas of marketing
and strategic planning, two areas of business that she particularly loves. "When
you do what you love for a living, it never feels like work," Phyllis
says.
"Women are never going to make any strides until we reach out
and help each other. We have a moral obligation - we have to make this
a better world for our daughters and granddaughters. Women are still
a great untapped resource - in the business world and elsewhere. Think
of all the creativity and ideas that women are not allowed to contribute
to the world. That’s why those of us who have the opportunity and
who have gotten anywhere on the ladder have to help each other. There
are a lot of women who forget this; who forget where they came from."
"I know I am paving the way for other women. I have to be super-professional.
I was the first woman in a lot of areas. It’s a very perilous path
between being assertive and aggressive, and knowing yourself enough to
be comfortable in yourself and maintain your sense of self in a male-dominated
business," she explains.
The South Shore Women’s Business Network has really blossomed
since we first started it 15 years ago. It serves a big need on the South
Shore, attracting and supporting women business owners.

Connections by
Lois Wood
|
In
case you think you're seeing things, yes this is me, Lois, but now I'm
the editor of Connections instead of Movin On Up! Jennifer
Barry Donovan did a great job on this column, and she's now taking
a leave of absence while expecting twins! So, here
we go! Lots
of Connections are being made, as you'll see!
Steven Soby of Soby Electric is thrilled with his new company image created
by Lois Wood Communications. "After being an electrical contractor for
27
years, I felt like I needed a shot in the arm. Now that my son
and I have
gone into business together, we wanted a fresh new look and that is exactly
what Lois delivered. It's hip and contemporary and has been
very well received. Pretty sharp look for a contractor!"
Jayne Pelosi of Renaissance Interior Design wants to
thank Helen Marrone for introducing her to Arbonne
International Skin Care. "Can I be candid
and say that I am dealing with both middle age wrinkles and peri
menopausal acne! This line is just wonderful it¹s luxurious
and you see results almost immediately, especially with the eye cream.
Let me also say that my metrosexual hubby is also using the eye cream.
Shhhh-don't tell anyone!"
Jayne Pelosi also wants to thank Jane
Ford of Melaleuca for bringing such
pure and effective cleaning products into her home. "I just celebrated
my
one year anniversary using Melaleuca products. Little by little I have
introduced new products into my home and have loved every one of them.
Every time you order products, you earn bonus points-this month I got
three free beautiful floral scented soy candles with my bonus points,
just in time for Mother's Day. And the best part is that I can order
them on line 24/7 and they are delivered to my door."
Finally, Jayne wants to thank Steve Gilman of SPG
Computer Services for driving ALL the way to the Cape and debugging
her computer of various and sundry worms! "He also showed me how to clean
out all of the misspelled words I inadvertently added to my dictionary.
Additionally, he installs hardware equipment, in our case, to network
our two computers. I thought he only dealt with software so this was
a real treat. We got far more than we bargained for".
Terry Anderson of Mayflower Cleanpro has LOTS of people
she has connected with: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank
and to recommend Jim Della Volpe, "the business mentor", of Growing
Tree Partners, Inc. Jim
and I met after I won a luncheon door prize for a free consultation and
now, I just have to spread the word about him! Jim is knowledgeable,
experienced and has that right combination of a professional and personable
manner to immediately put you at ease. He was an incredible sounding
board for me and built my confidence in him, and my business, as he reframed
the status of my company and laid out options based on the information
I had given him. I would have to say that wherever you are in your
business (no matter how large, how small or how long you've been doing
it) a conversation with Jim is a worthwhile investment. I'm going
to start a new tag line for him and ask: "Have you heard from Jim,
yet?".
Many, many thanks as well to Cheryl Arlanson Russo of the
Arlanson Law Offices who is handling my estate planning. Estate
Planning has been something I've, for the most part, always avoided
and neglected. Getting
to know Cheryl through the network though made me more comfortable with
the idea of tackling the task. Now, having worked with her on my
plan, I cannot say enough about her, her service, her staff, her associate
(her Dad) and the peace of mind that comes from getting my affairs in
order. Cheryl
is another one of those folks that just has "the like factor" going on. She
is professional and yet refreshingly down-to-earth with her counsel. She
is very easy to talk to and patiently helps you understand the law as
it pertains to your circumstances. She speaks plainly and honestly
while being extremely thorough and sensitive to the emotions involved. If
Estate Planning is a task hanging over your head, I encourage you to
meet with Cheryl for a free consultation.
A sincere thank you to Steve
Certa, Judy Walsh-Rodriquez and all those at Watch All involved
in the estimate and treatment of what I can now refer to as my "lawn" again! We
had a serious grub problem so Sepp from Watch All promptly came out to
have a look at the damage (it was all damage) and help us work out a
total plan for lawn care. He gave us advice for the
portion of the plan that we wanted to handle and then gave us a great
estimate for the treatments WatchAll would handle. The WatchAll
folks are all friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Their availability
is fantastic and the results speak for themselves! It's so true
when they say "Where
Watch All goes, grass grows"!
In addition, thank you to Lois Wood of Lois Wood
Communications for terrific work on a very last-minute project. Working
when she should have been on vacation, Lois designed a beautiful table-top
poster for MAYFLOWER CLEANPRO to use at a silent auction benefiting Breast
Cancer Research. As the auction was during a Ladies Shopping Night,
I challenged Lois with making carpet cleaning "pretty", yes pretty... I
have to tell you: she delivered! The poster looked great from the fonts
to the photos to the background. I obviously believe in Cleanpro's
message but don't think we would have ended up being one of the most
bid on donations had it not been for Lois's creative presentation.
Finally,
thank you to several members of the network for their business and
kind referrals:
Thank you to Raquel Mullany of Comfort Keepers for
her personal business and for her initiative on my behalf. On
her good word, Mayflower Cleanpro was given the opportunity
to perform a demonstration at her former building. After the demo, we
were invited to submit a bid for cleaning all the carpet in the common
areas of an approximately 76,000 square foot building!
Thank you to Brenda
Gellar of Radius HealthCare Center who has
become a loyal client and has sent numerous new clients to MAYFLOWER
CLEANPRO. She is an enthusiastic supporter or our service and
I can't thank her enough for her help in growing my business.
Thanks
again to Steve Certa of WatchAll Pest Control for having
us in to clean carpet at his offices in Weymouth and for his willingness
to be a commercial reference for us.
Thank you to Judy Rodriquez Walsh
of Watch All for her personal business and for her literal "card
carrying" belief in our service. I appreciate
so much the way Judy looks for opportunities to get the word out about
Mayflower Cleanpro. She doesn't hesitate to make mention of us
to folks she meets and often shares ideas on potential leads for us.
Thank you to Jayne Pelosi of Renaissance Interior
Design as well for
never missing an opportunity to tell her clients about my service, for
contacting me for brochures that she could hand out on my behalf.
Whew! All
these Connections being made among Network members! Now
I'm
exhausted, how about you? Even if you're swamped with work,
don't forget to
stop and smell the roses occasionally!
Happy Summer!
